The Tale Of Despereaux Book Summary

In the kingdom of Dor, where a mouse knight is a sad tale of the past, Despereaux Tilling is born, an unusual mouse with big ears and a love for music and stories.

He befriends Princess Pea and is banished to the dark dungeons for talking to a human. There, he meets a rat named Roscuro and a servant girl named Miggery Sow.

Roscuro’s yearning for light leads to a terrible accident, causing the Queen's death. The King decrees that there will be no more soup, and light and laughter will be banished from the kingdom.

Despereaux is determined to help the princess and be brave. He finds a needle and thread and sets off to rescue his friend, Pea.

Miggery, manipulated by the treacherous cook, is given to Roscuro as a servant. She is tricked into helping the rat kidnap the princess, and they both disappear into the kingdom’s sorrow.

Despereaux faces many trials and meets a kind jailer named Gregory, who tells Despereaux stories and offers him sustenance.

Through Gregory’s kindness, Despereaux regains his strength and returns to the light where he finds the princess and Roscuro in the castle’s giant room of thread.

Roscuro, who has come to regret his actions, takes a fatal fall, and Miggery, now a princess through the rat’s magic, releases him from his sorrow, allowing the kingdom to heal.

Light, soup, and happiness return to Dor. Despereaux is celebrated as a hero, and his place in the kingdom is solidified as he and Pea become lifelong friends.

Despereaux’s family is also restored when his father, who had been searching for him, is reunited with his son and brother.

From this day on, the kingdom of Dor is filled with light, love, and stories, with Despereaux and Pea leading the way.
